In an effort to provide adjunct professors with timely information on university resources and policies, the Human Resources Department, in conjunction with the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs, will host a special orientation session each semester for new and not-so-new Temple adjunct faculty members.
“Many of our adjunct faculty work part time for the university while working full or part time with another employer,” said Karen Cherwony, associate vice president of Human Resources. “Because they’re only on campus for a short time and generally teaching classes when they are here, we’re offering several orientation sessions at Main Campus and one at Ambler.”
Although the individual schools and colleges provide their adjuncts with an orientation, this is the first universitywide program open to the approximately 1,100 adjuncts who currently teach at Temple.
“Our goal is ensure that adjunct faculty feel connected to Temple and know the resources, policies, people and offices that are here to support and serve them,” Cherwony said.
During these two-hour sessions, adjunct faculty will receive information on the Teaching and Learning Center, Workers’ Compensation and Campus Safety Services, Computer Services and Payroll Management. In addition, human resource and academic policies and procedures will be reviewed.
A PowerPoint document of the orientation session will be posted to the Human Resources web site so that the adjuncts who were unable to attend can obtain the information electronically.
Orientation sessions were held on Main Campus on Oct. 21 and 22. Another Main Campus orientation session will be held on Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the TECH Center, 12th Street and Montgomery Avenue, room 111. The Ambler Campus orientation session will be held on Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m., in room 202 of the Ambler Learning Center.
