| Starting this fall, Temple will offer health insurance and other benefits to regular part-time faculty.
“Our data showed us that Temple has a large number of part-time faculty who return year after year to teach our students,” said Deborah Hartnett, vice president of human resources. “Because these part-time faculty, many of whom are specialists in their fields, fulfill an important role here, we want to extend these benefits to those who may need them.”
Temple will contribute 50 percent or 25 percent towards the premium cost of single health insurance coverage for part-time faculty depending on the number of semesters and courses taught in an academic year. Family coverage will be available at discounted group rates.
Those who teach two courses a semester for four consecutive semesters, or clinical or basic science researchers who work three or more days a week during a calendar year are eligible for a 50 percent contribution from the university towards single health insurance coverage.
Those who teach one course a semester for four consecutive semesters or one or two courses every fall or every spring semester for three consecutive years are eligible for a 25 percent contribution from the university towards single health insurance coverage.
The health insurance plan offered is Personal Choice, which is part of Independence Blue Cross. Personal Choice allows members to choose their own doctors and hospitals without needing a referral for a specialist or enrolling with a primary care physician.
In addition to health insurance, regular part-time faculty are eligible for numerous voluntary benefits, including auto and homeowners insurance discounts; automobile rental discounts; cellular service discounts; health club discounts; identity theft protection; discounted pet insurance; and travel assistance. And starting in October, Human Resources, in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, will offer orientation sessions for new part-time faculty.
“We want to give our part-time faculty a broader perspective of the university, our history, services, policies and procedures,” said Hartnett.
Health insurance enrollment will be open through Oct. 31, 2008. Temple contributions will be automatically applied, and coverage begins the first of the month following enrollment.
