Magid Abou-Gharbia, professor of medicinal chemistry and director of the Center for Drug Discovery Research at the School of Pharmacy, was appointed to a Board-Presidential Task Force on Education by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. The Education Task Force members will work to make math and science education a national priority.
Molefi Kete Asante, professor in the Department of African American Studies at the College of Liberal Arts, was elected president of the Text and Academic Authors Foundation. Asante will head the foundation for the next two years. It is dedicated to the promotion, development and guidance of academic and textbook authors.
The Beasley School of Law was ranked as the third most diverse faculty in the country in the March issue of The National Jurist Magazine.
William Bradshaw, director of athletics at Temple, was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame at the organization’s 41st Annual Induction Dinner in October.
Gregory L. Deshields, senior director of corporate relations for the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, has been selected to receive the 2009 Apex Award for Distinguished Service presented by the Black Meetings and Tourism magazine. The award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in their particular field of endeavor that have positively impacted travel and tourism. DeShields will be presented with the award on May 15, 2009 at a luncheon during the Travel Professionals of Color Seventh Annual Conference in Buffalo, N.Y.
Benjamin Rifkin, professor in the Department of French, German, Italian and Slavic at the College of Liberal Arts, received the Outstanding Contribution to the Profession Award, presented by the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East Eurpopean Languages in December.
Jonathan Sternberg, professor emeritus in the Boyer College of Music and Dance, received the Lifetime Service Award from the Conductors Guild of America for his contributions to the art and profession of conducting. The award was presented at the annual Conference of Conductors in New York City in January.
