Publications

Yi Wu, assistant professor in the Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center, published "Autophosphorylation docking site Tyr867 in Mertk allows for dissociation of multiple signaling pathways for phagocytosis of apoptotic cells and down-modulation of LPS-inducible NF-kappa B transcriptional activation" in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, made available online Nov. 26.

Thomas A. Marino, professor of anatomy and cell biology at the School of Medicine, co-authored the article “The Role of Scientists in the Beginning of Lift Debate; A 25 Year Retrospective” in the autumn 2007 issue of Perspectives in Biology and Medicine.

David Berg of the Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine; Richard Milner, director of surgical research in the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine, Amy Goldberg, chief of trauma and surgical critical care at Temple University Hospital; Daniel Dempsey, professor of surgery in the School of Medicine; and Harsh Grewal, chief of pediatric surgery at Temple University Hospital, co-authored “A cost-effective approach to establishing a surgical skills laboratory” in the November issue of Surgery.

Vani DAndolu, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the School of Medicine; Richard Milner, director of surgical research of the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine; Harsh Grewal, chief of pediatric surgery at Temple University Hospital; Sean Harbison, professor of surgery at the School of Medicine; and Enrique Hernandez, Abraham Roth Professor and Chair, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences co-authored “Correlating virtual reality and box trainer tasks in the assessment of laparoscopic surgical skills” in the November issue of American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Gregory J.W. Urwin, professor of history in the College of Liberal Arts, also published “Trooping the Colour in 1797,” in the autumn 2007 issue of The Guards Magazine: Journal of the Household Division.

Grants

Temple University Hospital-Episcopal Campus received a $250,000 grant to purchase additional critical life-saving equipment for its Emergency Department. The grant is funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development with support from State Senator Christine Tartaglione.

Presentations

Reza Fassihi, professor of industrial pharmacy and biopharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy, and three graduate students presented posters at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists meeting in San Diego in November. The poster topics were “Drug solubility character and release from controlled release polymer based matrices: An analysis of fronts(s) movement on dissoluiton rate,” “Development and evaluation of a swellable and floatable gastro-retentive delivery system,” and “Comparative study of swelling and erosion properties of PEO, HPMC and Kollidon SR.”

Roberta Newton of the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Professions presented the following abstracts at the 2007 Gerontological Society of America meeting: “The 8-foot Walk Test to Assess Mobility and Fear of Falling in Older Adults,” “The 8-foot Walk Test vs. the 20-foot Walk Test: Implications for Screening in Multiple Locations,” “Fall Risk and Fear of Falling Screening in the Emergency Department,” and “ Balance Confidence in Older Adults: Implications for Geriatric Screening.”

Barry Vacker, a professor of media studies in the School of Communications and Theater, offered a new and very different way to see Times Square in his experimental documentary film screened Nov. 8–9. Jo Ann Caplin, senior lecturer in the School of Communications and Theater, was co-producer, along with Olivia Antsis, a Temple alumna.

A.R.M. Imtiyaz, of the Department of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts, presented the paper “Theoretical Approaches-Explaining the Ethno-Political Conflict in Sri Lanka” at the annual meeting of Northeastern Political Science Association on Nov.15, in Philadelphia.

Gregory J.W. Urwin, professor of history in the College of Liberal Arts, was the keynote speaker on Nov. 9 at the Revolutionary War Cavalry Conference sponsored by the South Carolina Historical Society, Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution magazine, Wofford College, and Cowpens National Battlefield.  Urwin presented “‘There Is No Carrying on the War without Them’:  The Continental Light Dragoons, 1776-83.”  At the conclusion of Urwin’s address, Charles B. Baxley, the editor and publisher of Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution, presented him with an award for ‘Lifetime Achievement in Military History,’ citing “his decades of research, authorship, numerous books and publication, and for raising the bar of and about our vast U.S. military history.”

Enrique Hernandez, the Abraham Roth Professor and chair of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences was a visiting professor in the Dominican Republic. He gave two lectures to a combined meeting of Dominican Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and District III of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic held Nov. 8–11.

Adam Davey, of the College of Health Professions, and postdoctoral student, Giyeon Kim each made several presentations Nov. 6–20, at the Gerontological Society of America national conference in San Francisco.

William Dunkelberg, professor of economics at the Fox School of Business, addressed the “credit crunch” from the point of view of 6 million small businesses at the Economic Outlook Conference at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor held Nov.15-16.
