At a news conference this afternoon, Philadelphia Mayor-elect Michael Nutter announced his intention to appoint Temple Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Clarence Armbrister as chief of staff in his new mayoral administration beginning in January.
Although I will miss working directly with Clay in advancing Temple University, I am thrilled that he has been selected for this critical position in creating the future of Philadelphia. Clay has been a highly effective leader at Temple University and will be a tremendous asset to the Nutter administration and the city. I look forward to collaborating with him and Mayor-elect Nutter in the continued growth and prosperity of Philadelphia.
Since 2003, Clay has skillfully managed a portfolio encompassing a broad spectrum of the university’s operating activities. Under his leadership, Temple has achieved dramatic gains, including record-setting student applications and enrollment, significant increases in the number of students living on or near Main Campus, the opening of one of the country’s largest university computing and technology centers, and the implementation of an ambitious capital plan with new facilities under construction for Temple’s schools of medicine, business and art.
Clay has represented Temple with distinction, developing and maintaining important relationships with our neighbors, community leaders and elected officials. His oversight of Temple athletic programs has brought new levels of achievement, with the hiring of talented coaches, the agreement to play home football contests at Lincoln Financial Field, and the invitation to join the Mid-American Conference. He has also promoted the safety of the Temple community by increasing campus security personnel, technological assets and safety training. Clay’s many successes led to his promotion in January to executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Clay will remain with the university through the end of December. Over the next several weeks I will be consulting with the leaders of the divisions in his portfolio and others across Temple to establish plans for interim leadership.
Please join me in congratulating Clay Armbrister, and thanking him for his dedicated service to Temple University.
Ann Weaver Hart
President
