Recognizing recent achievements of Temple faculty and staff.

 

Mark Freed, chief information security officer, hosted “Information Security Roundtable,” which provided an opportunity for local information security professionals to meet and to discuss current information security issues related to higher education.  The event was held July 26. 

Joe Goldblatt, senior lecturer and executive director for professional development programs and strategic partnerships, received an award in recognition of his contributions to the field of event studies from the University of Technology in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Joe Goldblatt, senior lecturer and executive director for professional development programs and strategic partnerships, received a research grant from Temple’s Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies to conduct a study at the TGH Strehlow Research Center in Alice Springs, Australia.  
Goldblatt, a world-renowned scholar and researcher in the field of event studies, examined Strehlow's anthropological field notes with Australian aborigines to develop the first taxonomy of ritual and celebrations conducted by these indigenous peoples.  
Also in July, Goldblatt delivered his papers, "Global Trends in Events Education" and "Securing Future Events: The eSafe Knowledge Transfer Project," in Melbourne, Australia, where he was the featured speaker for the Event Educators Conference of Australia.
Goldblatt was also keynote speaker for the Third Tourism Outlook Conference, at the University of Technology Mara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he spoke about event tourism management and presented, "21st Century Cultural Heritage and Event Tourism Leadership in Malaysia."

Clark Hu, associate professor of tourism and hospitality management at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, was an invited speaker —invited by Chiba University’s vice president of education— for the first forum for the Center of Sustainable Tourism Creation on July 12, in Chiba, Japan.

Marla R. Wolfson, associate professor of physiology and pediatrics, and Thomas H. Shaffer, professor emeritus of physiology and pediatrics, at the School of Medicine recently were awarded Outstanding Instrumentation Research Paper of 2006 from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) for their paper “A prototype infant incubator for heliox therapy.” The paper appeared in the March/April 2006 issue of Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology.

Sanat Sarkar, a professor of statistics at the Fox School of Business and Management, has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He will be presented with this award at the IMS Annual Meeting during the Joint Scientific Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, held July 29-Aug. 2. Sarkar already is a fellow of the American Statistical Association.

Kendrick Whitney, associate professor of podiatric medicine and James McGuire, chair and assistant professor of podiatric medicine and orthopedics at the School of Podiatric Medicine, provided a course on advanced biomechanics evaluation and therapeutic management techniques July 11-15, as part of a post-graduate program offered at the Barcelona School of Podiatry in Spain.
