For the third consecutive year, IDG’s Computerworld named Temple University to its annual list of the “Best Places to Work in IT.” The list of the top 100 work environments for IT professionals is part of Computerworld’s June 18 issue and is online at www.computerworld.com.

Temple, ranked 67th, joins the University of Pennsylvania as the only two universities in the region to be recognized.

Of the 100 organizations that made the list, Temple ranked among the top 10 for its diverse workplace. According to Computerworld, minorities make up 39 percent of Temple’s IT staff, and more than 30 percent of the information technology managing staff are women.

“One thing I learned very quickly is that technology is a people business. Having state-of-the-art hardware and the latest software does little good if you do not have the proper people in place to operate, enhance and maintain them,” said Timothy C. O'Rourke, vice president of Computer and Information Services. “Being recognized as one of the 100 Best Places to Work in IT is a confirmation of the quality of the highly skilled individuals working in this department.”

The list is compiled based on the quality of employee benefits, diversity, career development, training and retention. In addition, Computerworld surveys many of Temple’s IT professionals, and their responses factored heavily in determining the rankings.

Computerworld cites the university’s internal training department for Computer Services employees and the “array of professional and personal development training offered through the university’s human resources department.”

Temple represented one of the few schools selected for the list, which is mostly made up of large companies including Hilton Hotels Corp., L.L. Bean Inc., Charles Schwab & Co., General Mills, UPS and Verizon Wireless.

Temple University has received numerous honors as a leader in computer and information technology. In January 2006, the Princeton Review named Temple to its annual list of "Top Wired Colleges" in the United States for the third year in a row, and four Temple administrators have been named to Computerworld’s annual Premier 100 IT Leaders list since 2002.
