The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place at approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 15th and Norris streets. A female was struck by bullets fired by a male near a Temple security booth. The victim is being treated at Temple University Hospital. Philadelphia police have identified a suspect in the case and are pursuing an arrest warrant. They believe the shooting was a result of a domestic disagreement, and neither the perpetrator nor the victim are believed to have any ties to Temple.
The security guard in the booth, an employee of Allied Security, was not harmed. Allied Security provides security services for the university to supplement the Temple University police force.
Philadelphia and Temple University police quickly determined the shooting was not random and there was no additional threat to the campus community. Temple has a comprehensive emergency alert system to communicate with students, faculty, staff and the University community in the case of a critical event or disaster if immediate action is required. Given that this was determined to be a contained incident, the decision was made not to implement the alert system. |
