Robert Colman, Sol Sherry Professor of Medicine, professor of physiology, microbiology and immunology, and professor at the Fels Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Biology at the School of Medicine, co-published “Bleeding that won’t stop” in the April issue of Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
Raemma Paredes Luck, associate professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine, co-published “Rhabdomyolysis: A review of clinical presentation, etiology, diagnosis, and management” in the April issue of Pediatric Emergency Care.
Fred Murphy, professor of management science and operations management for the Fox School of Business, co-authored “An Economic Equilibrium Model for Marine Transportation Services in Petroleum Products” in the March/April edition of Operations Research.
Li Bai, assistant professor and director of the computer fusion laboratory, and Saroj Biswas, professor, chair, and the director of graduate studies, both in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the College of Engineering, received a grant for their project, “Intelligent Distributed Computation Algorithms on Zigbee/802.15.4 Network.” The award, from the Office of Naval Research, provides $80,014 from April 23, 2008 through April 22, 2009.
Grace X. Ma, professor of public health at the College of Health Professions, received a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the project “All-in-One Breast Cancer Education and Clinical Support for Asian American Women.” The award provides $40,000 from April 1 through March 31, 2009.
Kim Cahill, director of the Temple Center for International Business Education and Research and the Institute of Global Management Studies at the Fox School of Business, chaired a panel session on business outreach at the Strategic CIBER Planning and Evaluation Conference, held at Temple University during the week of April 7.
The Center for International Business Education and Research held the ninth annual International Business Research Forum on International Sourcing in collaboration with Duke University’s CIBER, from April 3–5. The forum was co-hosted by Ram Mudambi, associate professor and department chair of general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, and Masaaki “Mike” Kotabe, professor of international business and marketing at the Fox School of Business, and was organized by Kim Cahill, CIBER director.
William Dunkelberg, professor of economics at the Fox School of Business, presented on capital markets and the sub-prime crisis at the Financial Management Association's annual dinner at the Pyramid Club in Philadelphia on April 18. On April 17, he served as a moderator at the Fox Corporate Speakers event at the Union League in Philadelphia. On April 18, at Drexel University, Dunkelberg was the host of the annual Monetary Policy and Trade Conference of the Global Interdependence Center, which was carried live by Bloomberg and Reuters. He served as the keynote speaker for the Annual Stars and Stripes Conference for Public Pension Managers in Key West, Fla. on April 14, and presented on the current problems and long-term prospects for the U.S. economy. He was also the featured speaker for Right Management’s key executives program on April 16, at Right Management Headquarters in Philadelphia, speaking about understanding the sub-prime crisis. On April 23, Dunkelberg spoke at the Devereux Foundation on residential and commercial construction and the financial crisis for the Real Estate Institute.
Jin J. Juo, assistant professor and director of EmG/neuromuscular medicine in the departments of Neurology and Pharmacology at the School of Medicine, co-presented the following presentations at the 60th annual meeting of the American Academy Neurology in Chicago, held April 12 through 19: “Direct infusion of adenoviral vectors containing amyloid precursor protein (APP) genes into mouse hippocampus failed to cause neuronal loss”; “Effects of lipopolysaccharide, EDTA, and glucose on muscle cell viability in culture relevant to the conditions of sepsis, hypocalcemia, and hyperglycemia in the development of critical illness myopathy”; “Acquired severe polyneuropathy in non-intubated patients of intensive care unit (ICU): Is this a subtype of critical illness polyneuropathy (CIP)?”; and “Is hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) an independent risk factor for peripheral neuropathy?”
Masaaki "Mike" Kotabe, professor of international business and marketing at the Fox School of Business, had his research “Overcoming Inertia: Drivers of the Outsourcing
Process” presented by his co-author at the ninth annual International Business Research Forum on International Sourcing, held April 3-5. Also at the forum, Tim Swift, a recent Ph.D. in general and strategic management, and Ram Mudambi, associate professor and department chair of general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, were part of a panel discussion, "Location and the Control of Knowledge Resources."
James Lammendola, instructor of legal studies at the Fox School of Business, Vanessa Lawrence, associate professor of legal studies at the Fox School of Business, and Kathy Daer-Bannon, instructor of legal studies at the Fox School of Business, presented at the Mid-Atlantic Region Meeting of the American Legal Studies Academy during the weekend of April 19, at Pierce College in Philadelphia. Lammendola’s presentation, which was co-authored with Michael Valenza, assistant professor of legal studies, was titled “Insiders in Bankruptcy: Expanding the Scope of Non-Statutory Insiders.” Lawrence’s presentation was on “Teaching a Sensitive Topic,” and Daer-Bannon’s presentation was on the “Class Action Fairness Act of 2005.”
Susan Mudambi, professor of marketing at the Fox School of Business, presented “Theoretical Perspectives on the Sourcing of Knowledge-Based Activities,” which was co-authored with Stephen Tallman of the University of Richmond, at the Offshoring and Outsourcing Conference at the SDA Bocconi School of Management, University of Bocconi, Milan, Italy, in April.
Arvind Phatak, executive director of the Temple Center for International Business Education and Research and the Institute of Global Management Studies at the Fox School of Business, was a coordinator and discussant on “Micro-response to Macro Shifts: Does change in the U.S. international position in the world with respect to values and global citizenship alter U.S. international business training needs?” at the Strategic CIBER Planning and Evaluation Conference, held at Temple University during the week of April 7.
Sheri Risler, lecturer of accounting at the Fox School of Business, participated in a panel on April 25, at the Mid-Atlantic Region meeting of the American Accounting Association. The panel discussed “Shared Experiences: Building a Community Between Academics and Professionals.”
Edward J. Trayes, professor of journalism at the School of Communications and Theater, gave a keynote address at the American Copy Editors Society’s annual convention on April 11, in Denver, Colo.
Donald Wargo, professor of economics at the Fox School of Business, and Olga Vilceanu, director of international programs at the College of Science and Technology, co-presented “How Students Forget: Techniques for Enhancing Learning” at the Lilly East Conference on College and University Teaching at the University of Delaware, held April 17 and 18.
