Marjatta Lyyra, of the Department of Physics in the College of Science and Technology, has been awarded $10,000 for REU Supplemental Support for the period June 1, 2007, to May 31, 2008, by the National Science Foundation for the project "Control of Molecular Properties by Coherence Effects in the Laser-Molecule Interaction."
Laszlo Otvos, of the Center for Biotechnology in the College of Science and Technology, has been awarded $179,147 for the period June 1, 2007, through May 31, 2011, by the Wistar Institute:Prime:Pennsylvania Department of Health for the project "Development of a universal influenza A virus vaccine."
George R. Baran, of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering, has been awarded $256,095 for the first year of support, with total funding estimated at $781,095 for the period June 1, 2007, through May 31, 2010, by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for the project "Ordered Dental Nanocomposites."
Sheryl Conkelton, director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the Tyler School of Art, has been awarded $200,000 by the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative for her project "Invented Cities."
Nae J. Dun, of the Pharmacology Department in the School of Medicine, has been awarded $362,500 for the first year of support, with total fundind estimated at $1,375,000, for the period April 20, 2007, to March 31, 2011, by the National Institutes of Health - National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for the project "Activity of Brainstem Neurons."
Martin W. Adler, of the Center for Substance Abuse Research in the School of Medicine, has been awarded $376,094 for the first year of support with total funding estimated at $1,577,933 for the period July 1, 2007, to June 30, 2011, by the National Institutes of Health - National Institute on Drug Abuse for the project "Opiods, Cannabinoids, Chemokines: Functional Implications of Cross-Talk."
Nina Gentile, of the Emergency Medicine Department in the School of Medicine, has been awarded $305,196 for the first year of support, with total funding estimated at $1, 525,980 for the period May 3, 2007, to April 30, 2012, by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for the project "Phila-Nett: Neurological Emercencies Treatment Trials (NETT) Network Clinical Site."
Thomas F. Gordon, of the Department of Public Health in the College of Health Professions, has been awarded $150,000 for the first year of support, with total funding estimated at $330,000 for the period June 1, 2007, to April 30, 2009, by the National Institutes of Health for the project "Using Perceptual Mapping to Develop Low Literacy CRC Screening Decision Aids."

Daniel Fesenmaier, professor at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, gave the keynote speech at “Innovations for Sustainable Tourism,” in Flagstaff, Ariz., which was sponsored by the BEST Education Network, on June 22.
Sam Hodge, professor and department chairman of legal studies and real estate at the Fox School of Business, taught a three-hour medical-legal web cast for the American Law institute-American Bar Association on June 20. The live program, “Anatomy for Litigators: The Extremities,” was seen by attorneys throughout the United States and its territories.
Ram Mudambi, associate professor and department chair of general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, served on the International Entrepreneurship: Current Debates and Future Directions Panel and the Multi-Level Issues in International Business Research Panel at the Academy of International Business Conference in Indianapolis held June 24 to 30.
Chuck Allen, an associate director of the honors program at the Fox School of Business, co-presented “Building the Relationship Bridge between Admissions Representatives and Academic Advisors” at the Pennsylvania Association for College Admissions Counseling Conference held June 24 to 26 at the Seven Springs Conference Center in Monroeville, Pa.
Katie Gerst, adjunct instructor of marketing and director of assessment in business administration, and Debbie Campbell, adjunct instructor in marketing and assistant dean of Undergraduate Programs, both at the Fox School of Business, presented at the Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Conference, at the Seven Springs Conference Center in Monroeville, Pa, on June 25. The session was called, “Teen Culture: What You Should Know about the MySpace Generation.”
Michael Leeds, associate professor of economics at the Fox School of Business, co-presented “The Effect of Effect of Exercise on Obesity among Children” with Jason Winfree, of the University of Michigan and “Charitable Contributions, Volunteer Time, and Marriage” with Brooke Huttner, of the Fox School honors program at the Western Economics Association Meetings in Seattle, June 30 to July 3.
Ram Mudambi, associate professor and department chair of general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, presented the paper, “Reverse Knowledge Transfer in MNEs” The Role of Mandates and Mechanisms,” at the Academy of International Business Conference in Indianapolis on June 24 to 30.
Paul Rappoport, associate economics professor at the Fox School of Business, presented a paper on wireless-only households on June 2 at the Sixth World Mobility Roundtable in Marina del Rey, California. His paper, which featured a Philadelphia perspective, was co-authored with Michael Goetz, associate professor of economics at the Fox School of Business, and Jim Alleman, a department chair and professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at Iowa State University.
Iis Tussyadiah, sport and recreation management lecturer for the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management presented a paper in June at the 15th European Conference on Information Systems in St. Gallen, Switzerland, titled “Interpreting Tourism Experiences from First Person Stories – A Foundation for Mobile Guides” which she co-authored with Dan R. Fesenmaier, professor of tourism and hospitality management.
The Fox School of Business had a strong presence at the annual Academy of International Business Conference in Indianapolis held June 25 to 28. Mike Kotabe, professor of general and strategic management, Ram Mudambi, professor of general and strategic management, Jay Choi, professor of finance, Arvind Parkhe, professor of general and strategic management, Susan Mudambi, professor of marketing, Kim Cahill, director of the Institute of Global Management and Tess Han, Crystal Jiang, and Qin (Anne) Yang, doctoral students.
Kendrick Whitney, associate professor of podiatric medicine and Orthopedics at the School of Podiatric Medicine, presented a series of lectures on a new modified approach to the podiatric biomechanical exam with pre-orthosis testing techniques at the Pedorthic Technology Days Seminar sponsored by the Health and Technology Division of OSU, Oklahoma May 28- June 1.
Jonathan Scott, a finance professor at The Fox School of Business, made two presentations at the Academy of Entrepreneurial Finance’s 18th annual meeting in Austin, Texas, during the week of April 23. His presentations included “Small Business Finance Data: National Federation of Independent Business Sources” and “Community Banks and Small Firms: Is It All About Relationships?”
Stephen Fogg, an associate accounting professor at The Fox School of Business, presented “Teaching Basic Data Analysis Skills Using Microsoft Dynamics GP” at the Microsoft Convergence Conference in San Diego on March 11-14. |
