Guenther Boden, Laura H. Carnell Professor of Medicine and chief of endocrinology at Temple University School of Medicine, was recently honored as a Father of the Year by the Greater Philadelphia American Diabetes Association and the Father's Day Council.

The inaugural Father’s Day Council awards dinner took place on June 14 at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia.

The council honors men who successfully balance their personal lives, strong ties to family, community service and thriving careers.

“They are not only dedicated to raising their families, but they have also made invaluable contributions to their community while achieving enormous success in their professional careers,” said Russ Moore, executive director of the American Diabetes Association for southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.

Boden has fulfilled all of these qualifications. He has enjoyed great success in his career, winning several honors and awards, including the 2005 Novartis Prize for Longstanding Achievement in Diabetes.

He has conducted internationally renowned diabetes research that has earned more than $3 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health since 2002, including a study on induced insulin resistance and atherosclerosis.

In addition, in June 2006, he received a $4.15 million grant from the state of Pennsylvania to study how telemedicine can fight obesity.

He has served the community through his efforts with numerous organizations, such as the American Diabetes Association, and as a fellow with the American College of Physicians.

Above all, he has been a positive role model for his four children.
