Helping Philadelphia’s residents meet their goals in employment and education is the purpose of Temple University’s next CommUniverCity Resource Day.

The Resource Day will be held on Thursday, June 14, from 2p.m. to 6p.m. in the Great Court at Mitten Hall, Broad and Berks streets in Philadelphia, and will feature workshops on employment, healthcare, child care, financial literacy and adult education.

Among the activities slated for the day are a panel discussion on how to help ex-offenders return to the workplace, workshops on finding the gateway to college through Community College of Philadelphia and on where to find services and shelter for young people in need, and a digital media training program.

There will also be a disaster-preparedness training workshop given by the American Red Cross and recruitment stations for the Philadelphia Police Department, the Philadelphia Prison System and United Parcel Service.

Because of the community partnerships that Temple has developed and is working to maintain through CommUniverCity, the information contained in these workshops has been tailored to address some pressing community issues, said Janel Bowles, co-director of Community Outreach and Hiring at Temple.

“By bringing together the agencies participating in these workshops, we’re giving the community a chance to access their resources simultaneously,” she said. “By doing this in a collaborative way, everyone benefits.”

Prior to the workshops, a leadership summit will be held to look at ways city agencies, community groups and the education community can work together to prepare Philadelphians to make the kinds of positive changes in both their work and academic lives that will help the city realize the promise that National Geographic Traveler saw when it proclaimed Philadelphia “The Next Great City.”

Among those participating in the summit are Denise Chambers of the Philadelphia County Assistance Office; C. Kent McGuire, dean of Temple University’s College of Education; Linda Mauro, dean of Temple’s School of Social Administration; Cynda Clyde of the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board; Diane Inverso of the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy; and Sandi King of the Manufacturer’s Initiative. This summit begins at noon.
