Name: Raysean Hogan

Degree received: B.B.S., risk management and insurance, Fox School of Business.

Leadership positions: Temple Student Government president, 2006–07; Main Campus Program Board president, 2005–06.

Hometown: Pasadena, Calif.

What I tell my West Coast friends about Philadelphia: “It’s a different world. Unlike L.A., many people actually live in the downtown area. More importantly, I tell them about local politics and problems that affect the urban community here, such as the murder rate and dilapidated neighborhoods. Then I talk about how great Temple is and how I’ve been prepared to be a leader and solve many of these problems that Americans face.”

Top accomplishment as TSG president: “Creating synergy between TSG and other students, student organizations, university departments and members of the community. We created a system where the flow of ideas and human resources was the major catalyst in our ability to dream, plan and achieve. Everything else was a result of that synergy.”

Time commitment required to be TSG president: “Twenty-four hours a day. As TSG president, I attend many meetings and events, and respond to questions, e-mails and voice mail during all hours of the day. With that said, I still play basketball three times a week just to show the younger students that I still have the best jump shot on campus.”

Time management secret: “My cell phone is my ultimate scheduler.”

Best part about being president of the Main Campus Program Board: “It was comparable to being the CEO of a small entertainment company. I learned how to understand a market and then plan events and marketing campaigns that would best serve that population. Because of that job, I would feel very comfortable as a Hollywood executive someday.”

Next stop: “I accepted a job in financial consulting with IBM. I’ll be based in the L.A. area, but I expect to be traveling all over the country. I will also serve as a campus organizer for Students for Barack Obama.”

What I’ll miss the most about Temple: “Everything. I really do love this school, the people and all of the opportunities available to Temple students. Temple has the best atmosphere for developing leadership abilities, and I do not take that for granted.”

Advice for Temple students: “Please challenge yourselves to do more: Read more books, do more pushups, develop public speaking skills — the best you can do today doesn’t have to be the best you can do tomorrow.”

Advice for the next TSG president: “Enjoy your summer, because that’s the only vacation you’ll have until you graduate. But Juan Galeano is like a little brother to me, so he already knows what to expect.”
