Introducing Shawn Beckett

Name: Shawn Beckett

Juris doctor, Beasley School of Law

Age: 32.

Hometown: Harlem, N.Y.

Occupation: Full-time history teacher at Imhotep Charter High School.

Best experience at Temple: “I’ve met a lot of wonderful people and developed lifelong friendships with future professional partners. I also had the opportunity to coach the mock trial team at Abraham Lincoln High School for three of the years while attending law school.”

Post-graduation plans: “I plan to teach for another year because I want to be around when my current class graduates. After that I’ll probably work for a small firm before I venture out and start my own practice with a few colleagues I’ve met at Temple. Eventually, I’d like to become a judge.”

Quotes that I live by:
“There is a reason for everything, so find the reason” — Robert L. Andrews Sr., my grandfather
“You can do it!” — Adam Sandler
“If it takes a lifetime for you to understand me, then I am here for life.” — Me

The last book I read outside of law school: Inner Peace: The Yoruba Concept of Ori by Awo Falokun Fatunmbi.

Advice for law students: “Law school is not the end of the world; don't lose yourself trying to get this degree. Pay attention to the outside world or else you’ll look up one day and all you’ll have is a juris doctor and nothing else.”
“Make connections from day one. Don't be so competitive. Take the time to learn about the person sitting next to you because they might be the judge you argue a case in front of one day.”
