Rising seniors (left to right) Noelle McKenzie, Kaitlyn Dreyling and Samantha Davis strike a pose at the New York Women in Communications Inc. annual luncheon last month after receiving scholarships from the organization.

Surrounded by the glitter of the world-famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, in front of an audience filled with celebrities, three Temple students had their time in the spotlight.

On April 23, Noelle McKenzie, Samantha Davis and Kaitlyn Dreyling were among 18 female students to receive scholarships from the New York Women in Communications Organization, Inc.

The organization presented the women with scholarships for excellence in the field of communication at the group’s annual luncheon.

A nonprofit association founded in 1929, the organization honors women who break down barriers and make a significant difference in the field of communications.

Being recognized by an organization that boasts Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira and Sen. Hilary Clinton as members was awe-inspiring for the rising seniors.

“I was honored just to be in the same room with all of those women,” McKenzie said. “It was an unbelievable experience to have them hear us and be interested in this younger generation.”

“I got to meet my idol; it was so unreal to get that experience,” Davis said, recalling her encounter with Glamour magazine editor-in-chief Cynthia Leive.

While the event featured lots glitz and glamour, the journey there took quite a bit of effort. The three women had to undergo a rigorous application process that included a nerve-wracking interview before a panel of nine NYWICI members.

But all the hard work paid off, as the three women achieved what should be a major stepping stone in their careers in the communications field. Davis and Dreyling, both magazine journalism majors, dream of one day heading their own fashion magazines, while McKenzie, a public relations major, hopes to be hosting parties for the rich and famous.

“These awards give us a great opportunity to network and connect with important women in the communications profession,” Davis said.

And the prizes weren’t too shabby either. Dreyling and McKenzie were each awarded a $5,000 scholarship, and Davis won $2,500. They also received a shopping spree courtesy of Ann Taylor and an appearance on CBS’ “The Today Show.”

This is not the first time the organization has honored Davis for her hard work. Last year, she was awarded a $10,000 scholarship, the Ruth Whitney Glamour Magazine Scholarship, as well as a one-week internship at Glamour magazine.

This year, Davis was the only second-time award winner and because of her commitment to the group was chosen to be the editor-in-chief of the student organization’s quarterly newsletter, nywiciNEXT.
