Albert I. Wertheimer, professor of pharmacy administration at the School of Pharmacy, co-chaired a symposium at the Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress in Amsterdam on April 24. During the symposium, “Off-label use of medicines: Abuse of a vehicle for innovation?” Wertheimer discussed the regulatory and economic aspects of the off-label use of medicines.

Martin W. Adler, Laura H. Carnell professor of pharmacology and director of the Center for Substance Abuse at the School of Medicine, was recently invited to speak at the New York Academy of Sciences, as part of their series on Frontiers of Science. In his lecture, "The Chemokine Hypothesis of Interneuronal Communication in the Brain," Adler discussed his findings, which suggest that chemokines present in the brain act as a third neural transmitter system.

Chuck Allen, associate director of The Fox School of Business Honors Program, co-chaired the Region 2 Conference of the National Academic Advising Association in March. In addition, Allen presented “Together We Stand: Creating an Advising Consortium on Your Campus” with Kristen DiNovi, acting director of student services for the College of Science and Technology.

Samuel D. Hodge, professor and chair of the Legal Studies Department at The Fox School of Business, was the featured speaker at the Illinois Trial Lawyers Conference in Las Vegas, where he spoke about "Understanding Medical Records." He also made presentations for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the educational arm of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh on "Back Injuries and Trauma."

Susan Mudambi, a lecturer of marketing at The Fox School of Business, presented two papers at the annual Research Conference and Workshop on Offshoring held April 14–16, hosted by Duke University’s Center for International Business Education and Research and co-sponsored by Temple’s CIBER program. The first paper, titled “The Outsourcing and Offshoring of Customer Relationship Management: A Transactional Value Model,” was co-authored by Stephen Tallman of the University of Richmond. The other, titled “The Offshoring of Commercial Services,” was co-authored by Farok Contractor of Rutgers University.

David Feeney, director of digital education at The Fox School of Business, presented “TUCAPTURE: THE DAY TU STOOD STILL” at the 2007 Maryland Distance Learning Association Conference in Baltimore. TUCAPTURE is an academic capture system that automatically records every minute of a meeting for immediate webcast, podcast, e-mailcast and delivery to Blackboard. Among those featured were John De Angelo, associate dean, information technology, The Fox School of Business; Darin Kapanjie, instructor of statistics; Robert Pred, lecturer in statistics; Marcus Sobel, associate professor of statistics; Christian Wurst, senior lecturer in accounting; Donald Wargo, lecturer in economics; Jonathan Scott, associate professor of finance; Deanna Geddes, associate professor of human resource management; Martin Doyle, instructor in management information systems; and Rui Baring, senior technical support specialist, Fox Computer Services.

Daniel Fesenmaier, professor and director of the National Laboratory for Tourism and eCommerce in the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Florian Zach, a doctoral student studying tourism at STHM, traveled to Ljubljana, Slovenia, to present at Enter 2007: The 14th International Conference of Information Technology and Travel and Tourism on Jan. 24–26.

Richard Heiberger, professor of statistics at The Fox School of Business, presented "Graphical Approaches to the Analysis of Safety Data from Clinical Trials" to the DIA/FDA Statistics Forum in Bethesda, Md., on March 7. The paper was also published in the journal Pharmaceutical Statistics.

Jack VanDerhei, an associate professor of risk, insurance and healthcare management at The Fox School of Business, gave a keynote address at the 2007 R.C. Knox Center for Insurance and Risk Management Studies Symposium on March 21 at the University of Hartford. The address was part of the presentation titled “Total Compensation: Health, Retirement or Food?”

Al Vara, reference librarian and subject specialist at Paley Library, delivered two presentations at the 15th Annual Conference of the National Association of African American Studies in Baton Rouge, La., in February. The presentations were titled "Racialization of the Atlantic World, or, How Racism Came to the Americas" and “Continental Epistemologies of Race, or, How Racism Came to America.”

Renee Hobbs, associate professor of broadcasting, telecommunications and mass media in the School of Communications and Theater, spoke to 500 educational leaders from more than a dozen countries in the Middle East in Doha, Qatar, at a UNESCO sponsored conference on global literacy on March 13. Hobbs’ pioneering work in media literacy was showcased in a symposium on innovations in education. The goal of this series is to offer a forum for international scholars to explore the implications of their research to practical educational applications.

Nicole DeSilvis, a senior specialist at the Small Business Development Center, and Kim Cahill, director of the Institute for Global Management, both at the Fox School of Business, presented “Globalization and Higher Education” at the Chester County Youth Leadership Program on Feb. 7. Nearly 50 high school students from more than a dozen schools participated.

Sheri Stahler, associate vice president, and Gerald Hinkle, director, both of Computer Sciences, gave a presentation titled "From Labs to Collaborative Spaces: Development of Temple University's TECH Center” at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference of Educause, held January 16–19 in Baltimore, Md.

Publications

Erwin Blackstone, professor of economics at The Fox School of Business, had his article “Generic Biopharmaceutical Drugs: An Economic and Policy Analysis" published in the February issue of Biotechnology Healthcare.

Joe Goldblatt, senior lecturer and the director of professional development and strategic partnerships at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, wrote an article in commemoration of Joel M. Abels and his wife, Lenore, which appeared on the front page of Travel Trade magazine Feb. 5. The Abelses oversaw the publication of Travel Trade and were both also executives in residence at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management in 2006.

Paul Seidenstat, an associate economics professor at the Fox School of Business, and Van Johnston, a professor of management at the University of Denver, published "Contracting Out Government Services: Privatization at the Millennium" in the February issue of the International Journal of Public Administration.

Simon Hakim, Andrew Buck and Erwin Blackstone, all economics professors at The Fox School of Business, published an article, "Funding the Local War on Terror," in the first quarter issue, 2007, of the Milken Institute Review.

Grants

Luis Del Valle, from the Neuroscience Department at the School of Medicine, received $284,375 for the first year of support with total funding estimated at $1,334,375 for April 1, 2007, until March 31, 2012, from NIH/NINDS for the project titled “Involvement of Surviving in the Department of PML.”

Grace Ma, from the Public Health Department at the College of Health Professions, received $40,000 for the period April 1, 2007, to March 31, 2008, from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for the project titled “Closing the Gap in Breast Cancer Education.”

Francesca Peruzzi, from the Neuroscience Department at the School of Medicine, received $326,500 for the first year of support with total funding estimated at $1,541,250 for April 1, 2007, until March 31, 2012, from NIH/NIMH for the project titled “Mechanisms involved in HIV-1 Tat mediated neuronal damage.”

Alan J. Izenman, professor of statistics and a senior research fellow in the Department of Statistics at the Fox School of Business, is part of an interdisciplinary research group that has recently been awarded a two-year grant totaling $316,714 by the National Institute of Justice to study factors influencing juvenile delinquency and recidivism in Philadelphia.

Renee Hobbs of the School of Communication and Theater has received a two-year, $600,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for her project titled “Copyright and Fair Use for Media Literacy.”
