Temple Jazz 25

Temple’s Jazz Studies Program celebrates its 25th anniversary with a week of concerts beginning Monday, April 23.
Over the past two decades, jazz giants such as Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner and Dizzy Gillespie have come to Temple as educators and mentors to students who will, in the future, fill the same role to the next generation of jazz musicians.

On April 23, the Jazz Studies Program at the Boyer College of Music and Dance welcomes back student and faculty alumni to kick off a week of local performances and master classes.

The week’s culminating event is when the Temple Jazz Band performs with Slide Hampton and program Chair Terell Stafford at Dizzy’s Club in New York on May 1.

Faculty members Dick Oatts, Bill Cunliffe, Luis Bonilla, Ben Schachter, Greg Kettinger and Bruce Barth will lead not only student ensembles,

but also their respective professional and touring ensembles in performances at Temple and Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus in Philadelphia.

“I am delighted at the enthusiastic response from Jazz alumni and faculty to participate in our 25th anniversary. It’s just another example of their commitment and willingness to give back to students,” Terell Stafford said.
