Lynn Kirby (center), an associate professor of anatomy and cell biology at the School of Medicine, shows local children the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet by wrapping an egg in plastic foam and dropping it to the ground.

Several faculty members and students from Temple staffed a special exhibit at the Franklin Institute to promote Brain Awareness Week from March 12 to 16, which featured an array of activities, from an egg drop experiment demonstrating the importance of safety helmets, to videos of surgical procedures designed to teach area schoolchildren about the various aspects of brain function.

The exhibit was organized by the Philadelphia Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience.

Ellen Unterwald (at right) and Russell Buono, chief of research and development at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Coatesville, Pa., prepare an exhibit that compares the brains from several species of animals to the human brain.

Several faculty members are active participants in PCSFN, including chapter president Ellen Unterwald, professor of pharmacology at the School of Medicine; and chapter treasurer Ellen Walker, associate professor of pharmacodynamics, and event organizer Sara Ward, a postdoctoral fellow and adjunct assistant professor, both at the School of Pharmacy.
