The community music scholars program for the 2008-2009 season

Melissa Douglas, Program Coordinator

For students from Philadelphia public and parochial elementary and secondary schools*

The Community Music Scholars Program (CMSP) is an initiative of the Music Preparatory Division of the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University. CMSP provides a comprehensive program of jazz and classical music instruction for school-aged Philadelphia children who have limited financial means. The program offers:

  • individual lessons in all standard orchestral instruments (including saxophone)
  • three levels of music theory class
  • jazz and string ensembles
  • movement and dance class (see below for details)       (Piano, guitar and voice instruction are not offered.)

Who:

Currently, the program services over 150 students from Philadelphia public and parochial elementary and secondary schools.

*How to enter the Community Music Scholars Program:

Philadelphia public and parochial school music teachers must first recommend children for this program. Annual auditions are then held to identify the most qualified instrumentalists for participation in the program.

Where and When:

CMSP meets on Saturdays mornings during the school year for 30 weeks. Instruction is provided at Presser Hall

(2001 N. 13th Street) and Pearson Hall (Broad Street & Montgomery Avenue) on the Main Campus of Temple University.

Faculty:

Faculty is comprised of professional music instructors from the Philadelphia area as well as Academic Interns from the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University.

Commitment:

Students are required to audition annually. Those accepted into the program will receive a scholarship from the University which subsidizes the majority of the cost of participation; each student is responsible for the remaining portion of tuition.
