The 2008 Umfundalai Intensive

African Dance Workshop Series

“Holistic African Dance Instruction”

Umfundalai is a Kiswahili word that means “essential.” Created in 1970 by Dr. Kariamu Welsh, Umfundalai is Pan-African dance technique that draws from dance styles and movements from throughout the African Diaspora.  The 2008 Umfundalai Intensive Workshop Series is designed for African dance educators, choreographers, students and professional dancers. The Intensive aims to provide participants with the tools to share quality African dance instruction with their respective communities. This year's experience includes:

  • FREE children’s classes (youth up to age 14) Umfundalai technique classes from beginner to advance levels
  • Master Class with Dr. Kariamu Welsh, creator of the Umfundalai technique
  • Classes in injury prevention and drumming

This year's experience will culminate in the Umfundalai Streams Concert, featuring contemporary African dance and a special performance by Kariamu & Company: Traditions.

Cost: $17 per class, $30 for two classes, $46 for three classes, $90 for two day all inclusive package, $5.00 observance fee.  Registration will be taken in advance and onsite.  Onsite registration is cash only.

Umfundalai Streams Concert tickets:

$20 general admisson,

$15 students and seniors (box office only),

$5 Temple students with OWLcard (box office only)
