More Facts about ASPIRA’s

"It’s a Better Life" Program

  • ASPIRA’s "It’s a Better Life" offers 16 lessons dealing with a variety of uses that support the idea of abstinence.  These lessons include:
    • Self-esteem
    • Body changes students may be going through
    • The importance of education
    • Money management skills such as the financial consequences of having sex
    • Staying involved and connected with school, family and friends

 

  • To date, the program has been offered to about 60 students from Kennsington High School, ASPIRA’s adjacent charter school, and students from around the area that participate in an after-school program.
  • Program advocates say abstinence  programs are different from safe sex programs because abstinence teaches students how to better themselves and make better decisions where safe sex programs just focus on sex

  • Priscilla Torres heads the program at ASPIRA. She says it's important to note how boys and girls perceive the idea of sex differently.  She says most girls associate sex with love and most boys say it just feels good. 
  • ASPIRA’s It’s a Better Life Program has been operating for one year.  Plans are underway to expand the program to more schools and more students.
