Gayborhood

Finding the Third Place

By Colleen Dunn, Nygia Hendricks and Lindsey Stewart

According to a woman in the area, "It (Woody's) has been there for years and it is a safe club. It is not sketchy. It is established in the neighborhood."

"This is it when it comes to bars...it is the only place that is big and gay and it has dance floors. He ( the owner) did it right when he opened this place."-Jim Lachman, 63, at Woody's bar

"It is a founding institution. People come to drink early and know it has heavy-handed drinks, plus the clientele is different and it's just very laid back."-Robert Hilton, on left, inside Woody's

"I'm from Trenton and we chose ( to come) here because it is just that bar... this is our first date." -Marcus Robinson, on right

"Woody's is the most recognizable, every other establishment can be very 'look at me.' I used to go here when I was younger, Woody's makes me feel welcome. It's very open, I like it - It's just the bar." - Keren Berkovitz, outside of Woody's

"I’m from Allentown, just coming down to visit my brother who lives here, but he’s straight, but he likes the neighborhood. It’s cute you know there are lots of flower boxes and plants…like these to just stick in your hair but he doesn’t know this neighborhood like I do, I can give you a story…A lot has happened here since I been coming, but you know what is still here, Woodys. Woodys is still here and will stay right here on the pavement of Philadelphia.”- Mary Glennon

“I like Woodys. It is down to earth like the importance of breaking bread, an Italian tradition: good people just sharing.”- David Mezzie, inside Tavern On Camac

“I have been everywhere, child, and seen togetherness…according to this strategic location…Woody's is the heart, but this is just my opinion;. I am still learning in my short four months of living here. The gay community’s heart, however, is still somewhat irregular because it can be so segregated and the beat of coming together is not constant. From what I have learned, places like Woody's, because it is older, holds a place there (as he gestures to his heart) in people, because people have had there first gay experiences there - which has memory and value.”- Ticco Moore, outside Tavern On Camac
