Hunting Park & Other Philadelphia Communities

By Dawn Walsh & Whitney Clemens

Throughout Philadelphia, sub-communities exist among the larger communities. Each one with their own story. Hunting Park Christian Academy exists among other schools, offering children of the community an alternative education that embraces and reaches out to their neighbors. They are nurtured and encouraged to strive towards positive and enriching activities.

Sacred Heart Free Home, located in Hunting Park,  is a community within a larger one. Their fundamental belief is that everything within their facility needs to reflect the dignity of life. Each day, they take the time to make their grounds immaculate, as a witness to the surrounding community.

Hunting Park Christian Academy, including children, parents and volunteers, prepared the Hunting Park track by sweeping and picking up the trash littered across the park. By hosting their Race for Education within the park, they show their belief that the park is a beautiful place and should be utilized. They have a common vision that the park can be redeemed through collaborative efforts and many problems can be solved by giving people hope.

Although Hunting Park appears rough on the exterior to the outsider, there are many individuals within the community that are striving for positive change.
