Along with flourishing Muslim businesses on the avenue, the Germantown Masjid and School Complex is an awaiting addition to the community.

The Germantown Mas-Jid and School Complex is currently under construction on Germantown and (Old) Stenton Avenue (now Berkley Street). The flyer reads, “The number of people who frequent the Mas-Jid has grown enormously and the current building is inadequate to accommodate them. In order to meet the growing needs of the community, we have purchased a new building that covers 40,000 square feet, has the capacity to house 5000 praying Muslims, a school from k-12 and other facilities.”

The Complex will also hold classes for women including sewing, entrepreneurship skills and family development. These new facility will be the largest urban Islamic Center in the country according to Masjid religious teacher and Islamic Book Store employee Tunji Turner. Turner says, “Unlike most schools or places of worship the Germantown Masjid and School Complex will be open for Muslims and non-Muslims all day, everyday, 24/7”. Turner believes, the new Masjid and School Complex will continue the growth of Muslim families, from seven hundred to eight hundred families, to one thousand to twelve hundred Muslim families.

The Germantown Masjid and School Complex is scheduled to open next summer or fall, in 2007. The blueprint of the building is final and the community is eagerly anticipating completion of the project.
