Germantown Islamic Businesses

Sadika Fashions and Mecca Restaurant on Germantown Avenue

The Muslim-owned businesses in the Germantown area act as an intangible network for the Islamic community.  All of them are connected in some way.

There are several Muslim-owned businesses along Germantown Avenue, and aside from the economic aspect of their businesses, they are a network working together to spread the word of Islam.

The following are some of the more prominent Islamic businesses on Germantown Avenue:

International Islamic Information Network

The I.I.I.N is the local Islamic bookstore in the Germantown community.  This store provides a wide variety of books, tapes, and CDs that give information about the religion of Islam.  The I.I.I.N also serves as a meeting place for Muslims in the area, where they discuss community issues, as well as business.

Abbulazeez Johnson, manager and sole employee, says:  “The store is directly linked to the Masjid (Muslim place of worship) because this is the community store for the Masjid.  We’re sort of an annex to the Masjid.  When people come to visit the Masjid, they stop in here also.”

In addition, the store also offers Muslim clothing and accessories.  Johnson said the Muslim clothing is significant because it helps to establish one’s Islamic identity.

Muhammad’s Sporting Goods

This store provides Muslim attire as well, but has a more extensive selection.  One can purchase robes, jackets, kufis, and caps from this establishment.  Along with that, Muhammad’s Sporting Goods provides a variety of colognes, incense, and oils containing natural scents and ingredients.

Muhammad’s Sporting Goods imports their products from all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, Spain, France, Switzerland, India, and Singapore.

An interesting aspect of this store is that the owner is a Muslim from Somalia who runs the store with the help of his son who has come to the United States for a better education.

Alsalaam Halal Restaurant and Pizzeria

This establishment, which is located in the Freedom Square shopping complex, provides the Germantown community with pizza, natural juices, and a number of pork-free entrees.

In this restaurant, there is a section of tables that are hidden by curtains where women and children may eat.

This store also provides free copies of the local newspaper, the Germantown Courier.  This allows people who come in to have an opportunity to read about community issues and concerns.
