What to expect if you are contacted: Students who meet minimum requirements for an available position should expect the following- 1. Asked to come in and take a topic test(s) based on general material all tutors are expected to know. 2. If the topic test(s) goes well, students are called in for an interview. 3. During the interview, students are tested to see if they possess the traits of an ideal tutor. 4. If all steps go well, you will be contacted about working for the MSRC. Application Deadlines: During high application periods, we expect all Temple students to follow these deadlines. All incomplete appplications will not be reviewed. If hiring needs go beyond the application deadlines (i.e. shortage in a subject area, etc.), we will have an announcement on our main page. Graduate Applicants: For the Fall Semester, the last day to apply is July 31. For the Spring semester, the last day to apply is December 15. Undergraduate Applicants: For the Fall Semester, the last day to apply is August 15. For the Spring Semester, the last day to apply is January 1. For Summer Session I, the last day to apply is May 1. For Summer Session II, the last day to apply is June 20. Job Descriptions: **PLEASE NOTE: All applicants for academically-oriented jobs will be required to take a basic-skills math test and test(s) for their respective position (i.e. chemistry test for chemistry tutors, etc.) ** Tutor-MSRC (undergraduates only): Description: Primary function is to assist students with difficulties faced with course material and in understanding of concepts. Hours per week varies but is based on overall need on the schedule. Requirements: Although many tutors specialize in one topic (i.e. math, chemistry, statistics etc.), a combination of skills (less than minimum requirements) in more than one topic may substitute for the minimum requirements for an overall tutoring position Minimum Requirements per subject area include a minimum grade of A- or better in the following courses and/or related experience. Excellent communication skills and ability to relay material in more than one way is desirable. A copy of current transcripts or academic records (resume is optional) must be attached to completed applications. Mathematics-knowledge in material up to and including Calculus III (Math 127 preferred) Chemistry-General Chemistry 71 (73) & 72 (74); Organic Chemistry 121 & 122 preferred Statistics-Stat 11, 12 and 21; 22 preferred Biology-General Biology 103 & 104 Computer Science- CIS 66 & 166 Physics- Phys 87 & 88; Phys 121 and 122 preferred Tutor-Athletics (undergraduates only): Description: Primary function is to assist student athletes with difficulties faced with course material and in understanding of concepts. Hours per week varies but is based on overall need on the schedule. Location of tutoring is in the Athletics Department. Requirements: Minimum Requirements per subject area include a minimum grade of B+ or better in the following courses and/or related experience. Work with a team of 2-3 other CAs in aiding students comprehension of course material. Requirements: Thorough knowledge of Algebra-Math 45 and College Algebra-Math 73; (Pre-calculus-Math 74 preferred). This position tends to be ideal for students in the process of meeting minimum requirements for tutoring. Office Staff: Description: Assist in the day-to-day operation of the MSRC. Employees will perform basic data analysis, greet and assist visitors in using the Center's resources, run errands, answer phones and other general office activities. Requirements: Basic knowledge of computers which includes Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Punctuality, resourcefullness and ability to juggle multiple tasks during high-usage periods are very important. Ability to treat all users with respect and consideration. High initiative level as well as being able to work independently are key. A current version of your resume must be attached to your application. Computer Consultant: Description: Primary duty is to answer questions asked by Temple students, faculty and staff regarding computers and software and their use. Other duties include monitoring printing and computer lab supplies, making yourself visible so users know where to find you, make sure all equipment is working properly, and keep the computer lab looking orderly. Requirements: Thorough knowledge of how computers function, along with knowledge of commonly used software applications. Must be able to be patient and helpful to all users of the lab. Previous experience is a plus. A current version of your resume must be attached to your application. Academic Intern-Tutor (graduate only): Description: Duties are very similar to undergraduate tutor positions but graduate students are expected to be more fluent with the core material tutored as well as upper level courses in a specific discipline. Position will follow the policy mandated by the Graduate School and the Graduate Student Union (http://mdev.temple.edu/gradschool/grad_school/policies.asp). Awards will vary from 5, 10, 15 and 20 hour/week assignment. Awards include tuition remission, a stipend and healthcare insurance. Additional duties include assistance in creating resource manuals for students looking for independent assistance. Requirements: Applicant must be a full-time matriculated student in mathematics, science, statistics, secondary education or a related field with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25. Minimum requirements are the same as the undergraduate tutor position. Highly motivated and exceptional candidates in a field of study are urged to apply. Graduate Extern-Tech Supervisor (graduate only): Description: Primary task is to maintain the established technology structure of the MSRC. Tasks range from general troubleshooting to creating a database to network maintenance. Ideal candidates should be pursuing a Master's Degree or higher in a Computer related field. Experience in a related field is a plus. Candidate must be able to commit to 20 hours a week of service, as required by the award (http://mdev.temple.edu/gradschool/grad_school/policies.asp). Requirements: Must be able to perform general troubleshooting; create and maintain a website; administer and regulate the Access database and Windows network; and have general programming skills. Must be able to work as a team with fellow Technology supervisors. A copy of your grade report(s), two letters of recommendation and a resume must be attached to your application. Graduate Extern-Tutoring Supervisor (graduate only): Description: The role of the Tutoring Lab Supervisor is to maintain a smooth functioning environment. Supervisor is responsible for getting to know tutors' abilities and being able to match up users with the appropriate tutor. Other duties include: acting as liaison between users and staff, fielding any comments or complaints users or tutors may have, and making sure the Center functions efficiently during periods of low and high usage. Requirements: The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Being able to perform multiple tasks at the same time is a necessity. Secondary Math and Science Education graduate students are urged to apply. Ability to function as an administrator (i.e. disciplining when necessary, keeping track of schedules etc.) is key.
