Individual Programs of Study

One of the many reasons the MLA Program is so attractive is its interdisciplinary flexibility in allowing students to develop their own intellectual pathways.  In order to assist them in their exploration and in order to ensure a certain coherence in their academic direction, the MLA Program invites students to file a one-page Curriculum Plan with the MLA Director.  This Plan, while not a requirement of the program, may be submitted during the first year of matriculation in the MLA Program, and the Director may request a conference with students to recommend modifications to the Plan.

Before each semester, students will consult with their advisor on courses to be chosen from the MLA Program itself or from CLA graduate offerings that meet their needs/interests, from departments as varied as Art History, History, English, Anthropology, Sociology, Religion, Political Science, Philosophy, African American Studies, and Geography and Urban Studies.

Prospective students should be aware that Individual Programs of Study may be designed within such interdisciplinary areas as:

"The MLA program is wonderful because it allows you to engage in courses that interest you as an individual. As a finance person, I find the creative aspect of the program to be a nice change from my daily activities as it gives me an opportunity to 'round out' my interests and my education. For me, to be able to discuss literature and philosophy with true scholars is a priceless experience and I feel very fortunate to be a student in the MLA program." -Sue Alcedo, Manager of Financial Operations
