How to Apply:
The graduate school application should be completed online at:
https://prd-ssb.temple.edu/prod8/bwskalog.P_DispLoginNon
Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:
All applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. A minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA is required for admission to graduate study at Temple University.
Transfer of Credit:
Students are expected to complete all of the MLA course requirements at Temple. However, up to six hours of graduate credits may be transferred from another institution with the approval of the MLA Advisory Committee and the Dean of the Graduate School. The credits must be equivalent to coursework offered at Temple, and the grade must be a “B” or better. The MLA Admissions Committee makes recommendations on transfer credits to the Director of the MLA Program.
The Request for Transfer of Graduate Credit form should be filled out and submitted to the MLA office sometime after matriculation to the program.
Non-Matriculated Coursework:
Up to nine hours of graduate study taken at Temple prior to admission may be credited toward the degree with the approval of the MLA Advisory Committee and the Dean of the Graduate School. In order for graduate courses taken at Temple on a non-matriculating basis to count toward the degree, the earned grades must be “B” or better.
Application Materials (as of Fall 2010):
The MLA Program requires:
1) a completed application (see above),
2) a CV or resume,
3) letters of reference,
4) a statement of goals, and
5) undergraduate transcript(s).
These materials can be sent to the MLA office.
CV/Resume:
An academic CV or professional resume is required.
Letters of Reference:
3 academic or professional letters of reference are required.
Statement of Goals:
A Statement of Goals is required. The Statement of Goals should be approximately 500 to 1,000 words and should address the following elements: your interest in the MLA Program; your academic and research achievements; your current and future research interests and goals; and your future career goals.
Undergraduate Transcript(s):
A certified copy of official academic records from every college and university attended, including Temple University, is required.
Standardized Test Scores:
The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller’s Analogy Test (MAT) is encouraged but not required. Any student admitted with a TOEFL score below 79 on the internet-based, 550 on the paper-based, or 213 on the computer-based examination must pass an English skills course or successfully pass the SPEAK test during the first semester of enrollment at Temple University.
Application Deadlines:
For Fall: June 30
For Spring: November 1

"The M.L.A. program is exciting because it allows you to choose an area of interest and challenges you to pursue your interest within an interdisciplinary framework of courses. I chose to focus on photography, and I studied, researched, and wrote about its history and influence on society. I also examined photography as a pure art form and mass media tool. I’m not aware of any Masters program that would have allowed me the freedom to pursue this interest." -Barbara Dolhansky, University Administrator, Computer Services
