Dr. Wheatley comes to Temple from the Arizona Heart Institute and Hospital in Phoenix where he was an attending cardiovascular and endovascular surgeon. His current research focuses on aortic stent-graft devices, investigations of autologous bone marrow cells in chronic limb ischemia, and embolic protection systems.
“Dr. Wheatley's wealth of experience and leadership skills made him an outstanding choice for this new position," says T. Sloane Guy, MD, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery, in announcing the new appointment. “His addition to the Temple medical staff allows us to offer patients the most advanced surgical treatments available for aortic and vascular issues."
"I am particularly excited to work with the heart and vascular teams at Temple," says Dr. Wheatley. "My focus will be on bringing innovative and less-invasive treatments for complex aortic and peripheral vascular diseases to Temple and our patients."
Dr. Wheatley has numerous journal articles, practice guidelines, invited commentaries and presentations to his credit. He is on the editorial boards of several leading medical journals, including the Journal of Cardiac Surgery and Journal of Endovascular Therapy. He also serves on a number of professional-society committees and sits on the scientific advisory boards of several medical device companies.
Dr. Wheatley earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed a general surgery residency at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and a cardiovascular and thoracic surgery residency at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.
