TEMPLE EMERGENCY ACTION CORPS (TEAC)

SERVICE LEARNING TRIPS: PANAMA 2011

In March of 2011, 16 TEAC medical students, one public health student, and two Temple University Hospital (TUH) attending physicians, Dr. Lleras Samuels and Dr. Thomas Comerci, traveled to Panama to assist victims affected by heavy rainfall and flooding that occurred during the 2010 rainy season. The team was hosted by Dr. Carlos Galvez, the Chepo regional director of health, who coordinated sites where medical care was delivered. The TEAC team worked at five sites and treated over 300 patients for a variety of conditions including parasites, head lice, GERD, depression, and more. We also distributed dental supplies and provided health education about water sanitation, prenatal and infant care, sexual health, family planning, and other topics.
