Skyscan 1172 desktop microCT system

 

Welcome to the Temple University and TUSM microCT Core. The MicroCT Core has a SkyScan1172 desktop microCT system that is available for independent scanning or analysis, aided analysis, and fee-for-service analysis for users within the university system. The analysis programs can also be used off-site from the core, as further described below under Features. We also have a fee-for-service option for users who are external to the university. Prices are available on Internal and External user forms. The microCT system is located in room 404 of the Medical Education Research Building on the Health Science Campus.


What is ex vivo microCT?


Micro computed tomography or "micro-CT" is x-ray imaging in 3D, by the same method used in hospital CT (or "CAT") scans, but on a small scale with massively increased resolution. It really represents 3D microscopy, where very fine scale internal structure of objects is imaged non-destructively. No sample preparation, no thin slicing - a single scan will image your sample's complete internal 3D structure at high resolution, plus you get your intact sample back at the end!


How does ex vivo micro-CT work?


A micro-focus x-ray source illuminates the object and a planar x-ray detector collects magnified projection images. Based on hundreds of angular views acquired while the object rotates, a computer synthesizes a stack of virtual cross section slices through the object. You can then scroll through the cross sections, interpolating sections along different planes, to inspect the internal structure. Selecting simple or complex volumes of interest, you can measure 3D morphometric parameters and create realistic visual models for virtual travel within the object.


Features of our SkyScan1172 desktop microCT system include:

  • Variable X-ray source options from 200-100kV, with a <5µm spot size, based on specimen requirements.
  • Variable resolution choices from 1 µm to 25 µm depending on specimen requirements and user needs.
  • Ability to accommodate samples that fit on a head of a pin to 50 mm in height or width in offset scan modes.
  • A cluster of 4 PC computers to the scanner to give high speed post-scan reconstructions.
  • Multiple programs for post-imaging analysis including quantitation that can be downloaded and used on your office or lab PC computers.
  • The above features allow us to accommodate scanning of a variety specimens ranging from bone, teeth, fat, muscle, microvasculature, geological samples, and more.

Use of the Core


The Core is managed by Dr. Mary Barbe and Ms. Mamta Amin. Dr. Barbe is the core director and handles administrative aspects of the core. Ms. Amin is the core manager and handles technical aspects, such as booking, training, repair and troubleshooting. Dr. Barbe is available to help with developing new research projects. Ms. Amin is available to help with establishing new protocols, troubleshooting and scanning/reconstruction optimization.


The Core is intended to allow you to do your own specimen scanning, reconstruction and analysis, although, as mentioned above, we can also offer a variety of fee-for-service options. Please see Getting Started for information about how to become a qualified user.
