Research Interests:


Dr. Scalia’s laboratory is interested in the pathophysiology of the endothelial dysfunction and the vascular complications occurring in chronic metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes. Dr. Scalia’s laboratory has implemented novel technology to study in vivo important functions of the vascular endothelium/vascular wall, such as 1) release of nitric oxide (NO) and oxidative stress; 2) expression levels of cell adhesion molecules; 3) vascular permeability of the microcirculation; and 4) key enzymatic activities by fluorescence confocal microscopy.


Major research interests are:

  • Regulation of leukocyte-endothelium interactions in the microcirculation.
  • Contribution of leukocyte trafficking to endothelial dysfunction and organ damage in obesity, diabetes and ischemia-reperfusion injury.
  • Regulation of endothelial cell adhesion molecules in hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and aging.
  • Regulation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase during acute and chronic inflammation.
  • Role of the calcium-dependent protease µ-calpain in endothelial dysfunction and vascular inflammation.
  • Role of adipocyte hormones (e.g., adiponectin) in the regulation of endothelial function in obesity and diabetes.
