Dr. Mangan is a 1973 graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his medical internship and residency at George Washington University Medical Center and Affiliated Hospitals and was board certified in Internal Medicine at ABIM in 1976. He received his clinical and research subspecialty training in Hematology at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts (from 1976-1979) under Drs. Robert Schwartz and Jane Desforges, where he was awarded a National Leukemia Associated Fellowship.
He was board certified in hematology in 1978 and joined the faculty at Albany Medical College where he continued his clinical and laboratory research studies on the regulation of haematopoiesis by immune-lymphocytes. In 1981, he joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, where he continued his clinical and laboratory research studies related to bone marrow and blood stem cell transplantation. He was recruited to the faculty of Temple University where he was promoted to Professor of Medicine.

clinical and research Interests: |
Over the last 18 years, Dr. Mangan developed a first class Adult Allogeneic and Autologous Bone Marrow and Blood Stem Cell Transplant program, which has transplanted over 900 patients with hematologic malignancies, marrow failure states, and selected solid tumors. His lifetime experience in autologous and allogeneic transplants includes over 1,000 patients.
Dr. Mangan has been recognized for his clinical expertise in transplantation by his peers as a perennial Philadelphia "Top Doc" and by "Best Doctors of America". Dr. Mangan as been awarded numerous grants from federal agencies, private industry and foundations.
In April 2000, Dr. Mangan moved his transplant program to the Fox Chase-Jeanes Hospital campus in Northeast Philadelphia following the affiliation and merger of the Temple University-Fox Chase Cancer Center oncology programs. His current research focus is the development of submyeloablative allogeneic transplant regimens for hematologic malignancies and selected solid tumors.

professional affiliations: |
Dr. Mangan served as president of the Pennsylvania Hematology-Oncology Society from 1995-1998. During his tenure as President of this society, he chaired a committee that established statewide clinical guidelines for marrow transplantation which were eventually adopted by the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
