Research Interests:

 

Gender Differences in Cardiac Function in Health and Disease. Since 1984, more women than men have died from cardiovascular related disease. Observation has shown that the incidence of cardiovascular disease increases with the duration of menopause. Yet, fundamental questions still exist regarding relevant gender-based differences in the pathophysiology and clinical management of cardiac disease. Furthermore, even less information is available on how the duration of menopause impacts on the progression of cardiovascular disease.

 

This significant gap in knowledge has grave consequences in the care of women with heart disease. The absence of enough credible information regarding sex-based differences in the pathophysiology of cardiac-related illness limits the ability of the medical community to design more effective treatment strategies which may offer additional advantages for women. With this in mind, my research interests center on understanding the role of sex-related differences in cardiac function in health and disease. Specifically, my work is centered on understanding the impact of hormones in the pathophysiology of cardiac dysfunction. My laboratory employs noninvasive imaging and isovolumetric methods to evaluate cardiac mechanical determinants of diastolic and systolic function using whole heart preparations. This work is currently funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
