My focus is on two main areas of research: 1) the effect of repetition and force on musculoskeletal and neural systems, and their interaction in a unique rat model of work-related musculoskeletal disorder (also known as repetitive strain injury), and 2) examining tissue and cellular responses after spinal root/cord injury, or as a consequence of cerebral palsy.
For the past 10 years, I have been involved in neurobiological, cell and molecular biological studies examining the effects of repetition and force on musculoskeletal and neural systems and on sensorimotor function with a research colleague, Dr. Ann Barr (now at Pacific University, Portland, Oregon). We developed a unique voluntary rat model of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (also known as repetitive strain injury and overuse injury) with varying levels of repetition and force, and have been working to characterize the short-term effects, and have now expanded to examining the long-term effects, of repetitive and/or forceful tasks on musculoskeletal and nervous system pathophysiology, focusing on injury/inflammation and how these processes induce degenerative tissue changes and sensorimotor dysfunction. I am currently exploring inflammation-induced catabolic tissue changes versus mechanical overload-induced tissue disruption using pharmaceutical methods to block inflammatory processes. This work is currently funded by NIOSH and NIAMS. I am also currently examining means of successful reinnervation of bladder and urethral sphincter targets after spinal root injury in collaboration with Dr. Michael Ruggieri of the Department of Urology, Temple University School of Medicine. This work is currently funded by NINDS. Finally, I am funded with Dr. Olivier Coq (University of Marseilles, France) by the Cerebral Palsy Foundation to examine the consequences of immobilization, brain hypoxia, or in combination on the musculoskeletal system and the central nervous system.
