surgical skills Program

The Surgical Skills Laboratory, part of the formal teaching program of the Department of Surgery, is a mandatory training course for all levels of residents (R-1 to R-5), with increasing difficulty of drills and procedures. All laboratory modules are supervised by an instructor who is a faculty member of Temple University School of Medicine.

All third year medical students participate in a two-day surgical skills orientation during their Surgical Clerkship. This course introduces the student to the needs of the surgical patient and surgical procedures. The first portion of the orientation involves a didactic session followed by a second day of skills laboratories providing an introduction to basic bedside and operating room procedures including knot tying, suturing, line and catheter placement and laparoscopic camera orientation.
