Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety

The mission of the Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety is to:

  • Provide excellence in the training of the art and science of medicine and surgery, utilizing a traditional laboratory setting as well as state-of-the-art virtual reality and simulation to learners including practicing physicians and residents, emergency response personnel and medical, nursing and allied health students and professionals.
  • Facilitate maintenance of clinical and procedural skills for all levels of learners in order to promote patient safety.
  • Enable high quality research in medical and surgical education including the development of innovative technologies for teaching clinical procedural and cognitive skills.

The School of Medicine launched the Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety in July 2005. The learning center is one of the most sophisticated venues of its type in the Philadelphia area. The multidisciplinary center offers unique learning opportunities for medical students, residents, attending physicians, nursing students, physical therapy students, and other allied health students and professionals.

The Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety receives support from many sources including the Temple University Health System whose constituents are encouraged to use the Institute for training programs. Learning opportunities are also available to groups outside the Health System including first responders, firemen and policemen.

The Institute is comprised of the Simulation Program, the Surgical Skills Program, and the Clinical Skills Program. More information on each program can be found under "Related Links" to the right of this page.
