Post Baccalaureate program

BASIC CORE IN MEDICAL SCIENCES (bcms) PROGRAM

The Basic Core in Medical Sciences Program is designed to meet the needs of applicants who need to complete the basic core premedical requirements of biology, general chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, with their respective labs.  Successful applicants have a college degree in a non-science major with a record of strong academic performance. The program also includes educational and extra-curricular activities at the School of Medicine that includes clinical shadowing, scientific journal review and MCAT preparation.

Overview of the BCMS Program

 

  1. Students will enter a full-Time 12-month, 32-semester hour non-degree-granting program.
  2. In the first and second summer semesters preceding the full year of study, general chemistry classroom and laboratory requirements are completed.
  3. In the fall and spring semesters, students will complete a rigorous, structured curriculum consisting of biology, organic chemistry, and physics with their respective labs.
  4. Students have the opportunity to attend an "Ethics in Medicine" seminar with opportunities to include mentoring and an introduction to the review of the medical literature.
  5. Students enroll in a Critical Thinking Skills Course in the Fall and an MCAT preparatory course in the Spring semester of the program.
  6. Following successful completion of the Post Baccalaureate course work, the students will take the MCAT examination at the end of May.
  7. Students who have maintained a 3.5 GPA and have achieved MCAT scores of at least 30, no section less than 8, will enter the MD program at Temple University School of Medicine.

Physics 1 and Lab

             

Spring Semester:

Biology 2 and Lab
Organic Chemistry 2 and Lab
Physics 2 and Lab

After completing all course work, students then sit for the MCAT no later than the designated May test date.
