Postbaccalaureate programs

OVERVIEW

Many students decide to pursue careers in medicine later than traditional pre-medical students, or choose to study non-science disciplines in college to optimally enrich their undergraduate educational experiences. For such students, often referred to as Career Changers, the road to medical school may be challenging, and structured options are limited. Further, currently available options for these non-traditional students do not offer direct administration, linkage, and integration with a school of medicine.

A second group of students- known as Career Enhancers - follow a more traditional pathway in the pre-medical sciences and are in need of some additional classroom work or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation. These students often look to structured postbaccalaureate programs for assistance. For students who are close to attaining the academic standards required of the successful application to medical school, this program often provides the final bridge to achieving their goals.

In each case, Temple University School of Medicine is in a unique position to offer a challenging educational program, including pre-medical studies in the College of Science and Technology, graduate science classes at the School of Medicine, seminars and tutorials with medical school faculty and students, clinical encounters, and mentored research experiences. Combined with counseling and mentoring provided by our faculty, the students will experience integration into the fabric of the School of Medicine. Ideally, the successful student will matriculate in the MD-degree program after demonstrating strong academic achievement and will have established a strong tie to the clinical and research enterprise. Mentoring relationships with faculty and students will continue as they progress toward ultimate residency selection and beyond.

The goals and objectives of the two types of programs differ, paralleling the needs of the students -- Career Changers or Career Enhancers. The Postbaccalaureate Program will offer two tracks to meet the needs of these two different groups of students; the two tracks will be known as The Basic Core in Medical Science (BCMS) and The Advanced Core in Medical Science (ACMS), respectively.
