Md/phd ProgramProgram Description
A state-affiliated institution founded in 1844, Temple University is now one of the largest universities in the country. The Health Science Center includes the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy; the College of Allied Health Professions; and Temple University Hospital. It is located on Broad Street , five blocks from the North Philadelphia Amtrak Railroad Station and about 1-1/2 miles north of Broad Street and Montgomery Avenue, the site of the main campus of Temple University . In its annual rankings, US News & World Report lists Temple University School of Medicine one of the five most applied-to medical schools in the nation, plus names it among the nation’s top 50 graduate schools for research.
The Temple University MD/PhD Program provides the opportunity to obtain expertise in clinical medicine and become broadly trained in modern basic science research at an institution known for excellence in teaching and research. The program is comprehensive, demanding, and challenging and thus attracts bright, highly motivated individuals drawn to a research career in academic medicine. Excellent research training in topical scientific problems is available with advisers in the School of Medicine Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program. Currently, 27 students are enrolled in the Temple University MD-PhD Program; an average of 3 students per year are accepted for study. Approximately 761 students are enrolled in the School of Medicine . The total population at the Health Sciences Center, including professional students, is approximately 2,000.
Recent graduates of the Temple University MD/PhD Program have received combined postgraduate medical (residency) and postdoctoral research training at Boston University Hospital, Brown University, Cornell University, New England Medical Center, Temple University Hospital, the University of California at San Francisco, the University of Texas, Yale University, Jefferson University, University Health Center of Pittsburgh, University of Michigan, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Duke University Medical Center, University of Chicago and other prestigious medical institutions.
