Interdisciplinary Biomedical Science Program

Over the first two years, PhD and MS students are required to take a defined set of courses as follows:

  1. Two courses from the Foundations of Biosciences series

  2. Two courses from the Integrated Biosciences series

  3. Two one-credit courses comprising Scientific Communication and Scientific Integrity and Bioethics

In addition, all students will take required and elective courses offered by their home departments from courses listed under Discipline-Specific Courses, to perform research  and write and defend a thesis.

Foundations of Biosciences

Foundations of Biosciences comprises two sections: Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology.  Each section contains two optional courses and students are required to take one course from each section (or more if they wish).

Biochemistry - either Fundamentals of Biochemistry (pdf) or Structure and Function of Macromolecules (pdf)

Why two options?  We realize that some students have a background in biochemistry, in which case they may prefer to take the more advanced course.

Molecular & Cell Biology - either Fundamentals of Molecular and Cell Biology (pdf) or Molecular Basis of Microbiology and Immunology (pdf)

Why two options?  Many students will work on mammalian cell systems, whereas others will focus on the very different prokaryotic systems and will require an introduction to the complexities of the immune system.  Students can choose between the two courses.
