A Message from Ala Stanford Frey, MD

Director, Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities

A disproportionately high rate of people in North Philadelphia suffer from preventable and treatable health conditions.  The Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities (CMHHD) works to develop more effective diagnostic, treatment and prevention strategies for this underserved population.

CMHHD partners with a range of researchers and program administrators

within the University and throughout the community.  This coordinated, multi-level approach furthers the mission of the CMHHD to eliminate healthcare disparities while improving the access of healthcare for underserved communities.

Specifically, the goals of CMHHD are to:

  • Strengthen the research infrastructure within the School of Medicine for the study and elimination of health disparities .
  • Conduct and support community-based participatory health disparity research and translate findings in to clinical interventions and best practices.
  • Build the capacity of North Philadelphia community-based health programs by serving as a partner and resource for disease prevention and health promotion.
  • Increase the number of African-Americans and Latinos who pursue careers in the medical field.
  • Improve the ability of medical students, residents and staff physicians to address minority health in a culturally competent and scientifically sound manner.

The Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities is committed to increasing access to quality medical care and supporting the healthy development of vulnerable and underserved communities. If you are interested in learning more about health disparities or minority health research opportunities, or if you’d like to become a partner in these efforts, please contact the CMHHD

Sincerely,

Ala Stanford Frey, MD
