Residency Program

 

Minor Core Faculty

 

Lester Karafin, MD. Dr. Karafin was the previous chair of the Medical College of Pennsylvania Department of Urology. He currently practices office urology at Temple University Hospital on a part time basis, and performs out patient procedures. He has worked at Temple for 7 years.

 

Alan Braverman, PhD. Dr. Braverman is our resident liaison during their lab rotation at the Temple University School of Medicine. He has helped the residents formulate ideas and experiments for their research project. He has been here for 8 years. His expertise is bladder pharmacology.

 

Ronald Rosenthal, MD. Dr. Rosenthal was the previous chief of urology at Abington Memorial Hospital for over 25 years. He still practices urology and has been an avid teacher for our residents in the use of prostate brachytherapy for prostate cancer.

 

Steven Hirshberg, MD. Dr. Hirshberg did a fellowship in infertility at Baylor Hospital under the direction of Larry Lipschultz, MD. In addition to practicing general urology at Abington Memorial Hospital, his expertise in the work-up and treatment of the infertile couple has been a major advantage for the overall experience of our residents. Dr. Hirshberg has been at Abington for 7 years.

 

A. Michael Samaha, MD. Dr. Samaha has been at Abington for over 15 years. He practices general urology and is an avid teacher and supervisor of the residents. His expertise is endourological surgery.

 

Yan Shibutani, MD. Dr. Shibutani has been at Abington for over 10 years. He has performed many hand assisted laparoscopic nephrectomies and has been a strong teacher and supervisor for our residents.

 

Larry Cutler, MD. Dr. Cutler has been with Abington Memorial Hospital for over 20 years. He performs many of the TURP’s with the residents, and teaches them the finer points of this operation.

 

David Chen, MD. Dr. Chen joined Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) two years ago and has already made an impact in resident teaching. His performs many laparoscopic cases with the residents. He is now implementing laparoscopic prostatectomy at FCCC

 

Mark Zaontz, MD. Dr. Zaontz was formerly the chief of pediatric urology at Cooper Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey. He is presently on the staff at Temple Children’s Medical Center and Virtua Hospital in New Jersey, as well as being in a private practice group. He also contributes to our monthly pediatric urology conference. His expertise is hypospadius repair.


Mike Packer, MD. Dr. Packer is one of our pediatric urologists who performs surgery with our residents and regularly contributes to our pediatric urology conference and journal club. His expertise is general pediatric urology.

 

Robert Mino, MD. Dr. Mino is in the practice group Suburban Urological Associates, and has been practicing at Abington Memorial Hospital for over 10 years. He regularly operates with our residents and is a regular contributor to our monthly Abington conference. He practices general urology.

 

Joanna Chon, MD. Dr. Chon has recently joined the Suburban Urology Associates group in 7/2005. She has been well received by the residents and her fellowship training in female urology adds an extensive wealth of knowledge and experience in female anti-incontinence and pelvic surgery for our residents.

 

Joseph Izes, MD. Dr. Izes is in the practice group Suburban Urological Associates, and has been practicing at Abington Memorial Hospital for over six years. He regularly operates with our residents and is a regular contributor to our monthly Abington conference. His interest is laparoscopy and he performs many urologic oncology procedures.

 

Vladimir Kolenko, MD, PhD. Dr. Kolenko has trained at the Cleveland Clinic and now works as the lab director in the department of Urologic Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Together with Dr. Robert Uzzo, they have established an effective laboratory rotation at Fox Chase with the residents that has met with great satisfaction.

 

Jonathan Roth, MD. Dr. Roth recently joined the pediatric urology faculty, coming from the University of Virginia. He will be a welcome addition to an already established, experienced pediatric urology rotation.

 

Christopher Kowalski, MD. Dr. Kowalski originally trained as a bariatric surgeon and was hired by the department of general surgery for their surgical weight reduction program. However, he quickly developed laparoscopic surgical skills that included laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. He was performing these with the general surgery chief residents as well as with our urology chief residents. Although the laparoscopic donor nephrectomy service has slowed down somewhat, we hope that it will increase in volume again with the arrival of a new director of transplantation surgery.
