Programs and Services - Advanced Lung Disease

The Temple Lung Center team is consistently at the forefront in treating the most complex and life-threatening lung diseases. Our physicians participate regularly in ground-breaking research in their search for better treatments and new cures. As a result, patients with emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and respiratory muscle diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis have access to the latest treatments advances.

The Temple Lung Center team is a leader in advanced treatment options:  the newest lung transplant methods; chronic respiratory failure treatments using non-invasive ventilation; rehabilitation of ventilator-dependent patients; and lung volume reduction surgery for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In recent years, lung transplantation has improved the lives of more and more patients.  And Temple has played a leadership role here, as well, performing dozens of these lifesaving procedures.  In fact, Temple’s Lung Transplant Program is one of the most active in the country.

Temple’s Ventilator Rehabilitation Unit (VRU) is an integral part of this highly-respected program. One of the only units of its kind, it offers patients with advanced lung diseases such as emphysema the best opportunity to be weaned off ventilators. In recent years, the Center has developed a national reputation in this area, and patients are referred to the Center’s VRU from other medical centers across the country.

Serious lung problems demand the highest quality care. At the Temple Lung Center, every effort is made to maximize respiratory potential and improve the overall quality of each patient’s life.
