Residency Program

 

Application Information

 

The period of residency training in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery is five years.  The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Temple University participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) sponsored by the American Association of Medical Colleges.  In addition, the Department participates in the national residency match sponsored by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).  Applicants must therefore register for both the ERAS and NRMP to participate in the otolaryngology-head and neck surgery match.  Information on these two programs is available through:

To begin residency training here at Temple, candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
  • Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  • Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who either
    • Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or,
    • Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in which they are training

Additional materials that are used in the selection of successful applicants include, but are not limited to:

  • Grades during medical school program
  • Scores on USMLE Step I and Step II or COMLEX examinations
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Composite Dean’s letter
  • Publications and presentations of research findings
  • Educational experiences in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery

The deadline for submission of application materials to ERAS is November 1.  Applications will be reviewed in early November and invitations offered to selected applicants to visit Temple for interviews.  Interview dates will be scheduled between early December and mid-January.  Applicants will be notified through the ERAS service if they are selected for an interview by the end of November.  All candidates not selected for an interview will also receive notification of their status at that time.
