Department of Physiology

The primary mission of the Department of Physiology is to provide excellent educational experiences for all of our students and to carry out biomedical research that will contribute to advancing medical science. It is also our goal to contribute to the service functions that are necessary for the operation of the School of Medicine and University.


Our research program, in addition to directly contributing to the advancement of science, is also an essential component in the development of the academic environment necessary to support our educational program.


Departmental educational programs for graduate students are designed to help prepare them for careers in academia, industry or government where they will hopefully contribute to the advancement of science and the education of future generations. Our educational programs for professional students (medical, dental, podiatric and physical therapy) are designed to provide the essential background in physiology for their clinical practice, prepare and stimulate them to become lifelong learners and to encourage some of these students to pursue educational and research careers.


Members of the Department of Physiology are actively engaged in research projects in the area of education, cardiovascular physiology, cell signaling, immunology, neurophysiology and pulmonary physiology. The specific activities in these areas are listed under the "Research Interests" section of individual faculty members' professional profiles.
