PhD Program

A PhD program in Biomedical Neuroscience is offered by the Department of Neuroscience, a newly established basic science department within Temple University School of Medicine.  Under the direction of Dr. Kamel Khalili, the Department of Neuroscience was established with the goals of:

  • Building a premier program in neuroscience education;
  • Stimulating major advances in the understanding and treatment of neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and human brain tumors;
  • Providing an environment which fosters the interdisciplinary and collaborative studies in the brain.

The Department of Neuroscience at Temple University School of Medicine ranks among the top 10 neuroscience departments nationally with respect to current NIH research funding in basic science departments within schools of medicine.  This funding will serve as a nucleus for interdisciplinary research, education, and advances in patient care.

This PhD program is intended to well train premiere graduates in biomedical neuroscience, capable of addressing important issues relevant to human neurologic and neurodegenerative disorders, and having the necessary education and training to make major research contributions. The curriculum is comprehensive and meets the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. The PhD program in Biomedical Neuroscience promotes an inclusive approach to neuroscience education and research efforts by faculty in the Department of Neuroscience and Graduate Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Specialization Program at Temple University (i.e., Departments of Biology, Psychology, Pharmacology, and Physical Therapy). The first year of study is integrated into the overall Biomedical Neuroscience Program within Temple University School of Medicine including 7 additional basic science departments. After completion of the initial core curriculum, the required and elective courses provide graduate students with a unique exposure to courses that address the vast and rapidly expanding body of knowledge within the domain of neuroscience. Successful candidates will likely be supported by research assistantships, teaching assistantships, training grants, research grants, or internal funding.

Master's Program

In addition to the PhD Program, the Department of Neuroscience offers a 2 to 3 year Master's Program in Biomedical Neuroscience.  This program focuses primarily on laboratory research leading to a Master of Science Degree.  This program will prepare students for careers in the biomedical neuroscience field in either academic, pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries.
