Temple University School of Medicine is undergoing a large expansion in research including the opening of the 480,000 sq. ft.
New Medical School Building within two years. With this expansion, research in each of the
basic science departments is being substantially increased. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology has received resources to recruit a number of new faculty members at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
Dr. John M. Daly, Dean of the School of Medicine, appointed
Dr. Doina Ganea as Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in September 2007. Previously, Dr. Ganea was Professor of Neuroimmunology at Rutgers University, Newark, NJ, and was recruited as Professor in the Department of Physiology at Temple University School of Medicine in November 2005. During her years at Rutgers and Temple, Dr. Ganea built a strong research program studying molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in inflammatory processes occurring both in the central nervous system and in the periphery, with emphasis on autoimmune diseases.
Integral within the newly developing Department of Microbiology and Immunology is an expansion of graduate education. Since its inception in 1965, over one hundred students have graduated from the program with PhD degrees. The graduates of the program have been very successful in seeking and obtaining excellent positions. Over 70% of them are holding academic and/or research positions. This academic year, we have 45 graduate students in the Program. The Graduate Program is supported by an NIH Training Grant in Microbiology and Immunology. Additional support is provided by research grants and departmental resources. Nearly all students in the program are fully supported financially.
The department has a strong commitment to professional teaching programs for medical, dental, and podiatry students. A demonstrated record of effective teaching and/or a strong potential for developing high quality teaching is important. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in educating both graduate and professional students.
