10TH ANNUAL DAWN MARKS DAY

Bettina Buttaro, PhD, was awarded the Dawn Marks Memorial Award on June 20th as part of the 10th Annual Dawn Marks Research Day at Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Buttaro, an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, was selected by the graduate students to receive this year’s award. Students selected Dr. Buttaro for her outstanding and enthusiastic teaching in the classroom and her genuine interest in the success of all graduate students. Prior recipients of this award include Drs. Carmen Sapienza, Scott Shore, Barrie Ashby, Patrick Piggot, Barbara Stitt and Dianne Soprano.


The day’s events featured a talk on lead poisoning and behavior by Joseph Schroeder, PhD, Assistant Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience at Connecticut College; the presentation of 62 posters representing the work of graduate students, medical students and postdoctoral fellows; and the announcement of the winners of this year’s Frank and Sandra Baldino Student Travel Award: Sabina Adhikary, Varsha Daswani, Patrick Doonan, Nicole Enman, Todd Getz, Eunan Hendron, Terrence Hubert, Lisa Korotowski, Neil Lamarre and Bryan Utter.

Established in 2006, The Baldino Travel award was created by Temple University School of Medicine alumnus and Cephalon, Inc. CEO Frank M. Baldino, PhD, and his wife to finance graduate student travel to scientific meetings across the nation. Dr. Baldino died in 2010.


The annual Dawn Marks Research Day honors the late Dawn B. Marks, PhD, former Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Professor of Biochemistry, a much-loved Temple University School of Medicine faculty member for over 30 years. This year’s event was organized by the Graduate Student Association, led by Jahan Marcu, President, and Virginia Kocieda, Vice-President, in conjunction with the Graduate and MD/PhD Office.
