office of institutional advancementSupport-A-Scholar ProgramDuring the last two decades, federal and state funding for medical education has plummeted, as have grant monies and clinical revenues, once mainstays of medical education subsidy. As a result, medical school tuition and fees have increased by 165 percent among private schools and by more than 300 percent among public schools nationally. Temple's tuition increases approximately 6% yearly on average. Scholarship support has steadily increased over the past five years, as well, but a concerted effort to raise both endowed and term scholarship funds is the most appropriate way to keep up with the rising cost of medical education.
Medical school tuition continues to rise nationwide, and Temple's students are now graduating with over $170,000 debt, on average. Loan repayment has become very difficult, with increasing interest rates, low residency pay, and stricter requirements for loan deferment and "economic hardship" status. This tremendous financial burden is now deterring many students from medical school altogether, and many current medical students find their specialty choice solely driven by a potential ability to repay their debt. The national shortage of primary care physicians is one of the visible results of the steepening debt burden.

The long-term solution to medical student indebtedness is through growth of the scholarship endowment. However, since Temple's endowment is relatively small, a new effort is being undertaken to boost the annual scholarship funds available. The School of Medicine aims to raise $250,000 this year, solely for term scholarship funds, all of which will be awarded next year in student aid. This amount represents the award equivalent of $5.5M endowed fund. Until the endowment grows significantly, even modest restricted gifts to this new scholarship program make a significant difference.
TUSM Scholarship Support
Term scholarships are unique because 100% of the money donated goes directly to students with financial need next year. Your gift will make a substantial impact on the life of a student with financial need. Please join Temple as it strives to help students realize their dreams of becoming physicians, while ensuring we are doing our part to address an issue of national importance.
Goal: $250,000
All three giving categories will qualify you for membership in the University's prestigious Russell H. Conwell Society and you will be invited to all University and School of Medicine related Conwell events.
All gifts made to the Support-A-Scholar Program prior to December 31, 2009 will be credited toward Access to Excellence: The 125th Anniversary Campaign for Temple.
